It’s no wonder one of the mascots of the Bloomingdale Trail is Buzz the Bee—in the summer months the native wildflowers are swarming with pollinators of all sorts. Here’s a look at some of what’s blooming and who’s visiting those blooms this month…
A brown-belted bumble bee (Bombus griseocollis) on prairie weed (Silphium terebinthinaceum) between Wolcott Avenue and Honore Street.
A leafcutter bee (Megachile mendica) on butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa) just west of Hermitage Avenue.
Common Eastern bumblebee (Bombus impatiens) on Rugosa (Rosa rugosa) near Ashland Avenue.
Western honeybee (Apis mellifera) on common boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) near Leavitt Street.
